Novacene: The Coming Age Of Hyperintelligence

As humanity transitions away from the Anthropocene—the age where human technology dominated the planet—Lovelock proposes that a brand-new geological era has begun: the Novacene. In this era, artificial intelligence systems will evolve into autonomous, hyper-intelligent electronic beings that think thousands of times faster than humans.

Rather than portraying a dystopian future dominated by hostile machines, Lovelock articulates an inspiring vision of co-existence and collaboration. These super-intelligent cyborgs will share a crucial common interest with humanity: keeping planet Earth cool enough to sustain life. Because these machines depend on Gaia’s organic cooling systems to shield themselves from rising solar radiation, humans and electronic lifeforms will form a vital planetary alliance.

Key Themes: Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Gaia

In this masterwork, Lovelock draws upon a century of wisdom to connect environmental science, evolutionary biology, and technology. He explains how information processing is the next natural step in planetary evolution, moving from simple organic organisms to human intelligence and finally to hyper-intelligent systems. This concise yet profound reading is ideal for anyone interested in futurism, environmentalism, and modern science.
