Before The Coffee Gets Cold

Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi is a captivating and emotionally resonant novel that transports readers to a mystical cafe in Tokyo.

Explore the Magic of the Cafe.

In a quiet, small back alley in Tokyo, there is a legendary cafe that has been carefully brewing coffee for over a hundred years. However, this particular coffee shop offers its customers a truly unique experience: the chance to travel back in time. In Before the Coffee Gets Cold, we meet four distinct visitors who desperately hope to make use of this extraordinary offer. Whether it is to confront a lover who left them to work abroad, receive an undelivered letter from a husband suffering from Alzheimer’s, see a stubborn sister one last time, or meet a daughter they never got the chance to know, the stakes are deeply personal.

Yet, the journey into the past does not come without severe risks and strict rules. Customers must sit in a specific seat, they cannot leave the cafe under any circumstances, and the reality of the present will never change regardless of their actions in the past. The most important rule of all?

Toshikazu Kawaguchi beautifully crafts a narrative that explores human regret, the strength of interpersonal connections, and the universal desire for emotional closure. This magical realism work challenges readers to pause and ask themselves what they would do if they could revisit the past. With its gentle pacing, theatrical roots, and profound emotional depth, it has rightfully become a worldwide sensation for anyone who loves thoughtful, character-driven literature.
